Understanding Chronic Pain: How Physio, Movement and Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference
Struggling with chronic pain? Discover how physiotherapy, movement and small lifestyle changes can help you heal, improve function and regain your life from persistent pain.
Pain is rubbish.
Persistent pain is really rubbish.
When pain lasts longer than it should, it can start to take over your life, affecting work, hobbies, relationships and even your confidence. After 21 years as a physiotherapist, I’ve worked with many people living with long-term pain and I know how frustrating it can feel when it seems like nothing works.
Why Chronic Pain Can Feel Hopeless
Persistent pain isn’t just “in your body” or “in your head.” It’s a complex interaction between the nervous system, muscles, joints and daily habits. Unfortunately, traditional explanations often don’t help.
Some people are told they have movement abnormalities or biomechanical dysfunctions, while others are told their pain is “all in their brain” and they just need to think differently. Neither explanation is accurate and both can leave you feeling stuck, frustrated or broken.
How Physio-Led Treatment is Different
This is where physiotherapy-led treatment makes a real difference. At Kesson, we focus on you, your body, movement patterns, lifestyle and what matters most in your life. We specialise in empowering people to heal, move and improve from living with long-standing pain.
The most effective results often come not from complicated routines or high-tech interventions, but from small, practical adjustments:
- Adding gentle, consistent movement therapy to your day
- Adopting small lifestyle changes to support pain management
- Shifting your mindset so you know you are not broken or dysfunctional
The Kesson Way is the pathway for all our Services and Movement Programmes.
Why Movement Helps Complex Pain
One of the biggest myths about chronic pain is that you need to wait for it to disappear before you move. In reality, focusing on improving function is key.
As you gradually return to the activities that matter most, your body becomes more resilient and your experience of pain can improve over time. Movement helps:
- Retrain the nervous system
- Build strength and flexibility
- Restore confidence in your body

Small Steps Lead to Big Changes
Persistent pain can feel hopeless, but it isn’t. The path to improvement often comes through simple, consistent actions that rebuild your function and resilience.
Over time, these small changes can transform how you live allowing you to enjoy your life again without being defined by pain.
After more than two decades in physiotherapy, helping people rediscover what their bodies can do is what keeps me passionate about this work. Pain may be rubbish, but recovery, function and resilience are absolutely possible.
